Description:
Camp Discovery in its fourth year, currently located in
Pacific Palisades in a shared space with the Palisades Malibu YMCA services 100
children throughout the summer (never more then 50 per day) from all over Los
Angeles County.
Camp
Discovery provides a
meaningful outdoor summer camp experience for children with mild to moderate
special needs, ages 3 to 10. Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and
Early Intervention Play Specialists provide their services and train the
counselors who each have a background in education and experience with special
needs children. A 3 to 1 camper to counselor ratio helps the campers (who have
a number of disabilities including, Autism, Aspergers, ADHD, Developmental
Delays, Speech and Language Delays, Gross and Fine Motor Delays, Sensory
Integration Dysfunction and Genetic Disorders) succeed and thrive.
Camp Discovery
seamlessly integrates therapeutic interventions into the camp day so as to
foster the campers’ self confidence, self esteem, language skills, fine and
gross motor skills and their ability to interact effectively with their
peers. All of these interventions help
insure that these children continue to make strides during the summer and do
not fall behind.
While at Camp
Discovery, campers
participate in traditional summer camp activities while making friends, often
for the first time. This experience, in turn, fosters personal growth and
accomplishment. The camp provides a safe, nurturing environment for the
children and also brings together families with common issues and allows them
to share experiences, offer emotional support and exchange information about
other resources in the community. The children have a wonderful camp experience
and the families have the joy of seeing their children thrive.
